Europe around 1500

Lecture series of the Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies in the summer semester 2025

According to the classic categorisation of historical periods, the year 1500 marks an interface between the Middle Ages and the early modern period. At the same time, the second half of the 15th century is either appropriated as the "autumn of the Middle Ages" or the beginning of the "long 16th century".

From the perspective of various disciplines, the lecture aims to take stock of the "Sattelzeit" around 1500 by analysing characteristic aspects as well as persistent and future-oriented developments in this period.developments in this period from historical, philosophical, literary and intellectual-historical perspectives.
