Collegium for Medieval & Early Modern Studies

Examinations

Please note the following to ensure a smooth exam registration process:

  • You can take home examinations either in the semester in which the course is taken or in the following semester. Depending on which semester you choose, you will need to register for the current semester or the following semester. If you choose to submit your examination in the following semester, your examination will only be recorded at the end of the following semester. It is strongly recommended that you submit the examination in the semester in which you are taking the course if, for example, you wish to complete your Master's degree programme after the current semester or change universities.
  • All module examinations of the Master's programme "Medieval and Early Modern Studies" must be registered via WueStudy . The respective examination numbers can be found in the module descriptions of the module plan . There is a separate registration procedure for the MA thesis (see below).
  • Register for your module examination within the deadlines set internally by the respective department responsible for the Master's module. Within German Studies, the registration period begins on 1 October (in the winter semester) or 1 April (in the summer semester). Cancellation is possible until the Saturday before the exam week.
  • It is necessary to register correctly and on time for all examinations. If you do not register by the deadline, the examination is not valid and cannot be recorded. This also applies to examinations that have been taken even though you did not register on time (ASPO §27, para. 2). Subsequent registration is not possible.

  • The type and scope of the examination performance are specified in the respective module description in the module plan . They are specified in the subject description.
  • The deadlines for the submission of home examinations are announced by your lecturer in the course.

Documents for a home examination:

  1. Cover page for the examination (can be found in the module plan, click on the desired module)
  2. Signed declaration of independence (can be found in the module plan, click on the desired module)
  3. Printout of the proof of examination registration at WueStuy
  4. Printout of the examination (see module plan for scope).

Submit these documents to your lecturer in accordance with the deadlines. The lecturer will correct the examination and send the original corrected copy to the Institute of German Philology, which is responsible for booking and archiving all examinations in the Master's programme "Medieval and Early Modern Studies".

  • Only examinations submitted on time with complete documentation (cover sheet, declaration of independence, examination registration) can be registered.
  • Your examinations for the Master's degree programme are recorded at the Institute of German Philology.
  • The examinations for the summer semester are booked at the end of September, the examinations for the winter semester at the beginning of April.
  • If, for compelling reasons, it is necessary to book examinations more quickly, please discuss this with your lecturer at the beginning of the semester and contact us in good time.

  • After registration, the examination results are archived at the Institute of German Philology.
  • You can view your corrected examination results. To do this, submit an application via an online form. This request must be submitted within one month of the examination being posted at the latest (ASPO 2015 §38 para. 1)

Final module: MA thesis (30 ECTS)

  • The Master's thesis is generally written in the specialisation subject of the Master's degree programme and comprises approx. 60 pp. (see the module in the module plan).

Topic and supervisor / reviewer

  • Contact a lecturer in your specialisation who is authorised and willing to supervise and review your thesis (generally professors and private lecturers). Discuss with him or her the exact topic of your thesis, the supervision and the timetable.
  • A language other than German can be agreed upon by the examiner in consultation with the module supervisor when registering the Master's thesis (in compliance with § 26 para. 9 ASPO 2015 ).

Examination registration:

  • Print out the application for the assignment of a Master's thesis (section "Forms") in duplicate. Complete one copy together with the supervisor of your Master's thesis and leave it with them. You submit the other copy to the Chair of the Examination Board (currently Prof Dr Hamm), who checks, completes and signs the application.
  • You then hand in the completed application in person at the Examinations Office . Ms Petra Eder, Zi. 01.012, is responsible for the Master's programme. The candidate will then be informed of the topic of the thesis.
  • You have 6 months after registration to write your MA thesis.

Submission of the Master's thesis:

  • Please note that you must be enrolled at the time of submitting your thesis.
  • As the MA thesis is registered directly by the Examination Office, no special cover sheet is provided.
  • The thesis, including the declaration of independence , must be submitted to the Examinations Office(opening hours) three times as a hard copy (bound) and twice in electronic form (CD/USB stick).
  • You will only receive an MA certificate upon application, see Examination Office.
